As far as the triangle goes, think of one on the earth's surface with vertex at the North pole and two sides going down from there at O degrees longitude and 15 degrees longitude to the intersecting the equator which would be the third side. The two sides are perpendicular to the equator which is the third side.

Right triangles by definition have a right (90 degree) angle. This of course means two sides perpendicular.
