We recently had rain and i noticed a corner in the wall was damp... anyway, with the leak resolved, i just saw this very faint gray area on the damp area (the wood is still unpainted) which was like drawing a small line using gray chalk on the wood ever so lightly. As i brushed it off with my hand, it came off. Now, i do not know if this is mold or just dust .. or the residue with the water that just dried up... oh yeah, and what do i do with it?

You can cure this problem by going to the hardware store (ACE Hardware carries it) and pick up some oxalic acid crystals. Contractors use this to take grayness out of wood before they stain it. Follow the mix ratio on the container and wash your wood with it. It will remove the grayness from the wood and make it look new again. If you think that you may have mold left on the wood you can add a quart of bleach to a gallon of solution to kill the mold spores.

If it came off, and left no discoloration, it was dust or salt in the water.
Just get the leak fixed.

Wipe it off with a bleach rag.
