That's actually very funny because our society has become very comma happy while we are writing. Commas are usually used when combining sentences that have that have the same subject, when the sentence includes a short list, or when including something in the sentence that is an addition or not necessary to the sentence to understand the context, as well as a few other rules. There is a difference when writing something that someone is only going to read and when you are writing to speak. When we write to speak, we will insert commas where we would like to take a breath. The better rule of thumb is to not include run-on sentences. If your sentence seems to be taking forever to complete, consider dividing up the thought into two or three different thoughts that follow along the same idea in a paragraph. You always want a reader to be able to remember how the sentence began once then find their way to the end.

I often slip into a coma in the middle of a long sentence.

Depends on the context.
For example.

This is good.

We were using the truck to get to the mountains as fast as possible but, knowing we were being chased by the enemy, we all were every nervous.

This is bad.

The cows all had a surplus of ,milk after being neglected for a week so farmer Jim worked around the clock to get them all done.

Comas are never good unless you wake up quickly from one without brain-damage.
Perhaps what you really mean is "comma" ?
Punctuation is great when used correctly - many don`t !
