I've been listening to hip hop (and that is the only music I listen to) since I was in the third grade and I managed to stay off of drugs and even obtained my Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from a BSBA accredited university. But you are probably right, I am an idiot

Music is a part of culture. So if a certain culture identifies with a certain type of music, you're going to see a strong correlation. If thinking about women is a big part of hip hop culture, then the people who listen to rap and hip hop will probably do that. If a big part of rock culture is doing drugs, than people doing drugs will most likely be fans of rock. The same goes with every genre . Statistically, older people like classical music. Country is most popular in certain areas of the United States. Also, there is nothing wrong with not caring about religion, politics, or other societal topics. Just because you might think that's what an intelligent person chooses to do, doesn't make it true.

The cause for violence can not be stripped down to music or media of any kind. In this case, Rap Music is just used as a scape goat so that society does not have to face that the cause for violence is society itself. Rap Music only reflects the trends of the time. Art (yes, I consider rap an art, if you ever listened to the RZA you will probably agree with me) often serves its recipients. Rap is a tool to open our eyes to the violence that is being carried out. Rap isn't the cause; Rap can not pull the trigger or rape or kill. Rap is a whipping boy. The real enemy is the person committing the crimes. As a persuasive essay you may find a hard time finding any concrete evidence that Rap Music causes violence.

I think there are intelligent and not so intelligent genres of both rock and rap. Within the two genres, there are religious, political, and social slants within the lyrics of both rap and rock songs. I think the kind of mind-numbing music that comes to mind when thinking about degenerative rap or rock is pop/mainstream variations of the two genres. Mainstream rap AND rock spew out romanticized ideals, inconsiderate messages, and just plain childishness. And this is what youth is listening AND learning from. It's what happens when money and marketing get a hold of something good. They turn it into a money machine with bland, oftentimes empty messages that are bent simply on making profits by being uncontroversial and immature.

Both genres of music bring out the dumb *** in us all for some reason. If its the beat, the lyrics, or the person spitting them out, who knows! But if you can't be smart enough to enjoy the music and take it for what it is, along with life then there is a serious problem!!

What a nasty stereotype. I'm a big fan of both metal and rap, but I'm also very socially aware. I HATE all things drug related and refuse to have any worthless druggies around me.
Before you set a stereotype in your head, you really ought to get to know more people outside of your own walk of life.

Could it be that any music based less on content than "danceability" appeals to people who are less concerned with their brains and more concerned with their bodies and images? So rather than rap (dance, pop, etc.) making people dumb, couldn't it be said that those kinds of music attract people who are dumb to begin with?
