If you want a top quality backup that's indistinguishable from the original, you need to buy Dual-Layer DVD's that at best, are about a $1.25 a piece.
Use the free DVD Decrypter to rip (copy) the disc to your hard drive.
If you want to use single-layer 4.7gb discs that are about $0.25 each, you have to compress the video.
Do a search for DVDShrink. It's a free all in one program that transcodes DVD's.
If you want to re-encode your movies for an almost indistinguishable copy, you need CCE (Cinema Craft Encoder) combined with DVD Rebuilder.
The best discs are TY (Tai Yuden) and Sony.

i admire amassing DVDs. I purely purchase the "maximum suitable" version available with the main particular good factors and stuff. i'm style of choosy like that. one in all my maximum suitable DVDs are in all likelihood my 5-disc Blade Runner set with 4 thoroughly diverse cuts of the movie. yet another one would be my Criterion sequence worry & Loathing in Las Vegas. It surely has audio commentary via an getting previous Hunter S. Thompson it is a few thing else. I even have the merely proper Matrix sequence. that is have been given all 3 videos and The Animatrix, however the whole set is TEN discs long!! that is strictly for followers.

I should first point out that you can't do it legally with rented videos.
I would recommend getting an ISO program as they can take an exact image of the disc. There might be some free ones around the net, but really the best one I used is PowerISO which costs a bit of money but if you're gonna be backing up a lot of DVDs its worth it

I would use DVD shrink along with nero. DVD shrink is freeware. If your DVD burner didn't come with nero software you will have to buy a copy. DVD shrink works with nero so once you start DVD shrink it will rip a copy of your DVD to your hard drive and then burn it to a DVD using nero. Very automated process.

Well I'm going to assume you are doing this legally ;)
Use a program like Alcohol 120% to rip/burn CDs/DVDs
Also, DvdRip or #1 Dvd Ripper have worked for me before
