I was wondering if its ok to change my name? Heres my story: my mom and dad weren't married when they had me. My mom was divorced from a previous marriage. Then my mom met my dad, and they had me. Soon after, they broke up. I still saw my dad all the time, but my mom (at birth) had given me her ex-husbands last name because it was the same as hers. Last year my mom died, and 3 months later my dad drowned. I am my dads only child, and I don't even have his last name. I want to change my last name to my fathers last name, just as a way of remembering him. Does that sound stupid? While I'm doing that, I was also thinking about changing my first name. Do many people do that? I was thinking that it could just be some sort of fresh start. As a way of helping me get past everything. I don't know if it makes sense, but it's something that I have been wanting to do....

What do you think?

Im sorry to hear everything you've been through, and i think you should definatly change your last name to your biological fathers last name, im not sure if you should change your first name because it might be a bit confusing getting used to a whole new name but if you really think thats for the best the sure go ahead, but i think its the right idea changing your last name! Go ahead if its really what you want.

I've changed my name due to my father and a stalker. To basically hide.

At least you have a good reason and make sure you pick something you can deal with for the rest of your life.

That's a sweet way to remember your dad. And don't most people have thier dad's last name anyway? I don't think you should change your first name though.

Dang! You should go with your heart. Who do you want to be? I've changed my name, and so has my step-son for different reasons sort of like yours. Personally I would change it, it's a painless process. But I'm not you. Go with your heart, it sounds like you really want to do it. All you have to do when filling out paperwork to go before the judge is explain why. Good luck, honey.

You deserve your real father's last name. As for changing your first name, good luck with it. I dont know why it would be necessary. It could be more of a hassle than anything, really.

You didn't say how old you are. If you are of age, you can change your name. You might want to contact your court records area to find out the process. Beware, it'll cost you. In our state, it costs $10.00 per letter you delete, and then $10.00 per letter you add. Please think about your first name, you might not want it changed. If you were close to your dad, he probably had a hand in naming you. If there is a relative of your dad's living (your grandparent, aunt, uncle?) please talk to them and find out before you change your first name. Good Luck!
