Believe it or not, the animal with the longest tail also has a pretty long neck. The giraffa camelopardalis, also called the camel-leopard by the ancient Romans is on record as the amimal with the longest tail. The male giraffe has a longer tail than the female. This skinny guy's tail can grow up to an incredible eight feet in length!

I just looked back though Aesop's fables. I think the longest tale was the one about the fox who complained about the grapes he could not reach. That wad about a page long and most of the tales were closer to a half page.

Well i know it is NOT a snake, only the last 2-5% of their body is tail. So on a 5 foot snake their is only about a 2" tail (I know, i have a pet snake that is 160cm long), and even on an 8m (25') snake the tail would only be about 8" (20cm) long.

On land proportionate to body weight the longest tail would probably belong to the legless lizard, half of them is tail. that is one way you can distinguish them from a snake.

Biggest tail alone (not compared to body size) i'm going salt water crockodyle or blue whale, it's hard to pick between them due to vastly differnt shape.

But if it is a tale and not a tail we are talking about I would think the WOLF. The wolf is in all tall tales.

Dear friend,
In reptiles it's snake, in mammals it's monkey where the tales of these creatures date back to krutayuga. I think you know the story of vinathi and kadruva as well as Hanuma.
Hope I could satisfy you.
Bye.

Just plain longest, or proportionately longest? If proportionate I'd say the lemur.
