For the American worker, they have been horrible as wages have been edging downward in many service based areas because of the ability to hire cheaper laborers from Mexico and Central America.
For the execs, it's been pretty nice and they can keep costs down.
It all depends on who you ask.

It was both. We could not compete with China without it, and it is great for the economys of border states like Texas. However, it is bringing many environmental and economic problems with it, which neither party wants to address. Corporate money flows well to keep them quiet.

Free trade is generally good for all countries as it allows countries to specialize in production of goods and services that they have a competitive advantage with, and lowers prices for consumers everywhere.
American consumers have definitely benefitted from free trade.
That's my two cents.

VERY bad thing for America. "Free Trade" is one of those Orwellian labels which is the OPPOSITE of what it really means.
In this new millennium we must push for FAIR TRADE and denounce so-called Free Trade. Free Trade is an oxymoron - we're PAYING for it, all right.

They were good for capitalism -- because they support the basic premise that markets should regulate themselves without govt control or intervention.
Whether they are good for America depends on whether you think America is better served by promoting capitalism, even if some jobs are lost because of the choices people make -- or promoting socialism, and regulating business ventures "for the good of society".
I oppose govt regulation of business, other than preventing businesses form causing direct physical harm. Beyond that, it's up to consumers and customers to regulate business through their free market choices.
