Yes, pitchers should continue to retain their categorical eligibility for the MVP Awards.
But it is meaningless right now. The voters, unfortunately, have developed an anti-pitcher bias. There are far too many who have fallen under the notion that a pitcher cannot contribute as much as an "everyday" player. (This is nonsense, but a dissertation for another time.)
If Pedro's 1999 season or Maddux' 1995 seasons cannot win MVP (Martinez finished 2nd, Greg 3rd), then a pitcher simply canNOT win an MVP in the current environment.

It's fair. Look, MVP could be anyone. Cy Young can only be a pitcher. Instead of restricting the pitchers from the MVP, there should be a Player of the Year Award. This would triangulate awards so that there would ALWAYS be a player and a pitcher involved. As it is now, there is the possibility that one player could win ROY, Cy Young, and MVP. If he qualifies, why not. Also, a flashy guy might be POY but an MVP could be someone who actually helps his team but who doesn't have great numbers -- or a pitcher.

It's possible, although unlikely, that one pitcher wins the Cy Young (because he has the best number), but another pitcher wins the MVP because he made the most difference on a team.
If your team is stacked full of pitchers (like Oakland was in 2002/2003), one may stand out as the best.
Then, another guy, perhaps a closer, was the difference between a pennant winner and an also ran. (something like Eckersley 92 performance)

Yes. A pitcher could very well be the Most Valuable Player in the League.

Is it fair for position players to be eligible for the MVP award when they already have the golden glove and silver slugger?
Why would they be limited to one award? They all play baseball.

A pitcher has to be truly outstanding to win the MVP since they do not play every day.

Yes, because they can be both the best pitcher in the league and the most valuable player as well.

if a player is THAT good than they should be able to win both awards. The award should always go to the best player, no matter what. (except bonds)
