The first thing that needs to be done to become a liberal Democrat is become Democrat...
The second thing that needs to be done is to find a worthy cause and approach it with a single-mindedness that destroys everything else to the exclusion of the cause.
The third thing that needs to be done is wonder why everybody thinks you're a zealot.

Believe in the liberal philosophy -- freedom of choice, respect for diversity, willingness to make changes.
Then, be willing to tolerate the socialist leanings of the Democratic party -- which is hard given that liberal economics directly opposes socialism.
But enough people are willing to set aside their economic differences, because at least the Democratic party is not hostile to the concept of liberal freedoms.
