Do countries with a tribal structure really want to be changed? Would maybe leaving the alone be the better course of action? just curious

The governments in both Afghanistan and Iraq while 'elected' don't seem to enjoy as much support as the might once have.
At least some of the objections seem to come from the old 'warlord' system, where each tribe had a boss that was picked cause he was the toughest SOB in the valley.

Yes...but only temporarily. Any democratic government that is imposed will eventually fail and resort to despotism--government by warlord (the oldest form of government).

The people have to choose a democratic government for themselves in order for it to work.

No - instead you allow the people to choose how they wish to be governed.

For example in both Afghanistan and Iraq we allowed the people to choose the form of government they wanted. Those countries now have the government types their people want.

Remember that the terrorists and the news media do not speak for the people of those nations.

That is what elections are there to find out.

They DID elect this government.

Umm. Under the old system, would we have heard if the people didn't support it?

I think they need to determine their own destiny and if they say 'we want Islamic law' it isn't our place to say, 'come on, you really can't mean that....'

But I still think free elections are the only way we know what the people, rather than the radicals, really want.
