The cars are powered by normally aspirated (no turbo- or super-chargers) v8 engines limited to 3.0 litres and also limted to 19,000 RPM.
There are several makes of engines in F1 right now.
* McLaren are powered by Mercedes-Benz (who own part of the team)
* Ferrari build their own, and the sell them to Toro Rosso and Spyker
* Renault build their own engines, and they sell them to Red Bull
* Toyota build their own and sell them to Williams
* Honda build their own and sell them to Super Aguri
* BMW build their own
The engines themselves are really quite purpose built race engines that these days are mandated to last two races (compared to a time when they could be replaced at will by the team).
The present engines are homologated through to 2011.

2.4 V8's now! I remember back in the days of the turbo V12's and watching the British GP at Brands Hatch in 1984......the noise from those cars as they went down the front straight was just incredible!
