You are right, it is bad for them to be passive smokers, but still it is better than actually smoking, because they don't get addicted, perhaps they even get so disgusted that they will never smoke as grown ups. My friend's father used to smoke a lot in their house, but both she and her brother are totally anti-smoking, and they don't smoke as grown ups. If they had been offered a cigarette at a young age, they would be smoking now too. Plus after a certain age they were at school most of the time. You are right though, and I acknowledge to my father that even though he smokes, he never smoked in the house and he never let anyone else smoke in the house.

Direct ingestion of the smoke seems to be worse then second hand exposure to it. Because smoking affects development, a three year old should not be able to do it.

Nor should anyone be smoking around a three year old.

But the great thing about America is that we expect everyone to do the right thing, and don't necessarily need to be up their *** about it. You can't legislate everything people think is a bad idea, the government that governs best, governs less.

I think that smoking in the presence of children should not be permitted. Some states have made it illegal to smoke in the car with your child and in public places. I am a smoker but I never smoke in front of my children let alone in the same room and I keep my cigarettes out of their view, hidden in my purse or dresser drawer because as if smoking in the same room isn't damaging enough I know what I do isn't good for me and shame on me for not having the will power to quit but I would hate for them to see me doing it and get the idea that it is ok for them too.

There is no way to enforce what you are proposing. Even if cigarettes were made illegal, people would find a way and still smoke.

By the way, it's "allowed" to smoke.

I agree smoking around a child is endangering that child's welfare. Good point.

Well of course! There is no differance.
And while we're at it why can't they drink liquor, carry a handgun or drive a car?
Maybe all three...At the same time!
