Arithmetic is a start. Make sure she knows Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division, and that includes multi-digit numbers, decimals, and fractions.

Reasoning skills would be the second priority. Many things in algebra come from things you have seen before, and if you can manipulate the concepts and reason things through, it will be a lot more clear. Whenever she learns a new concept, think how it is related to previous material. Otherwise it will seem like bunch of unrelated formulas.

The third would be to develop a grasp of when an answer is right or wrong. It's not an exact science, but it is a very useful one, both on tests and in the real world. Have her get in the habit of double checking anything that seems incorrect, especially if it doesn't make sense. You cn often get a general idea of an answer, even before you start. And that should be compared with what you get after you work it out numerically.

All the basic arithmetic: fractions, decimals, percents, ratio and proportion, integers. Simplifying expressions like 3 + 4 x 5 by doing the arithmetic in the right order; should get 23, not 35.

Take a look at the table of contents of the math text at the link. That's your typical pre-algebra curriculum.

i guess, knowing how to multiply/divide variables is the main, and dont worry, when time comes, she'll learn everything else!! :]
