Steve Carlton...good old Lefty...won a Cy Young for a last place team, accounted for almost half the teams wins that year.....at least the last time it was was lefty!

Like Chipmaker said, there are really two possible answers. Ryan did pass Walter Johnson, but he also passed Steve Carlton, who had leapfrogged him during the 1983 season.

That's a good question, by the way. I've always thought it was pretty cool that the 1-2 guys actually battled back and forth during the season like that.

Walter Johnson held the record, Ryan caught him first, then he and Carlton hopscotched each other through 1984 before Ryan finally buried Carlton permanently.
