Yes, you do. When death occurs if there is any fecal material in the lower (descending or sigmoid) colon it can be expelled by the relaxing of the intestinal muscles and the sphincter. In many cases however, this may not occur until after rigor mortis has passed. Usually by this point the body is in the care of either the coroner or a funeral home. Also there is the "death rattle" - the natural escaping of the residual air in the lungs when they relax and further deflate, sometimes occurring hours after death, and even the occassional muscle spasm which can cause a corpse to sit bolt upright on the morgue table or even in the casket. Most funeral homes anticipate this if possible, and use a chest harness attached to the inside bottom of the casket in order to keep the corpse from sitting up during viewing hours.

My sister in law is a nurse. At one time she worked at a retirement home. You know the type of place where death visits more than family. She said whenever any of the residents died the first thing the nurses would do is pack their butts with gauze because when death occurs the muscles begin to relax and it could result in a big mess. I hope I don't end up in one of those places.
