Why is there a need for a food chain?
Why couldn't God go, you know I think I will have all my creatures just eat vegetables or oatmeal all the time.

Or just drink water to nourish itself. Maybe like a milk shake everyday to be fully satisfied.

For those that said that it is to control population, have missed my point. I was trying to imply that if there was a God/Creator of the universe, then why couldn't God/Creator get the design right from the beginning, especially if God/Creator is all-knowing or all-powerful before It created the universe.
This either means that (a) There is no such thing as a God/Creator. or (b) God is not all-knowing or not all-powerful to be able to create a perfect world for all the creatures(fish, mammals, insects, birds) to live in for food/energy peacefully without having to consume another creature.

Why is there predation you ask? Hmmm, that's one of the mysteries of the Church of Rome as they say...in the same file as 'who was Cain's wife if only Eve was around?', 'why is there child rape, deformity and disease in the world?'; how do you fit billions of animals onto an Ark?...how did the fresh water fish survive?...."why did the passenger pigeon and thousands of other animals survive the flood only to become extinct centuries later?"... "why did god let 6 million of his Chosen People get incinerated"... i could go on, but you get my drift.

In the beginning, God made the earth and the plants and the creatures on the earth.
God designed the earth that gave everything a purpose.
The plants grow then are pollinated by a variety of insects who only pollinate certain plants. The insects eat from some plants and pollinate other plants.
Some insects eat other insects to survive this is why there is such an array of insects. To keep our earthly plant growth healthy. Trees themselves create oxygen for us to breath.
Some animals survive by eating plants, others survive eating other animals that eat plants. This is how the larger animals survive and this is how our planet sustains itself. It is Gods design.
The same with the ocean. Have you ever observed a body of water with no fish? The lake becomes stagnant and overrun with algae, then it starts to stink, but place living fish in it to eat the plants , algae and insects and the lake thrives and stays healthy.
Sharks are just plain eating machines, but they were created to keep the population of the ocean down, just like the rest of the animal kingdom.
Lions and other meat eating predaters keep the animal population under control. It is called the food chain.
Then there is man. God designed man to eat meat, not just vegetables. If some people ate just vegatables they would be sick. An all vegatarian diet is not healthy for everyone. This is why there is such a variety of plants, insects, animals and people on this earth.
The bible tells us in Genesis the purpose of why he created animals in the first place.
The bible states that God created animals, some for companionship, some for clothing and some for food.
Everything has a purpose and it is all God's design.

omg you're a vegetarian aren't ya?
GOD!
you people make me so mad....
what's your deal?
why can't you realize that humans and animals alike get most of our proteins from the meat and God is all powerful and all knowing and don't you DARE contradict me......
and no matter what you do .... if we didn't eat the animals....the population would get out of hand.....didn't you know that animals make babies too?
do i have to explain the multiplication table to you?
have you ever thought for a single second that maybe your theory is wacked and it's not God that's the problem....
you have to realize that humans are the only living beings with feelings and even tho it is wrong to hunt animals for sport.....nature is indifferent and a dead baby fed to the lions just means more room for another baby.........
animals should be killed for survival not sport so i guess i can see where you're coming from......but i still think that your theory is screwed up....and being vegetarian is wrong.....it's a psychological disorder......it's a fear of eating a dead animal.....
did you ever think that maybe the animal was put on this earth to fulfill a bigger purpose such as sustain human beings and other predators.....every animal has a prey and predator.....so i don't see what the problem is......

If you wish to assert mysticism, than your quest for any intelligible answer is defeated.
Your assumption of a supernatural beginning defeats any answer we can give because any reasonable answer would be from studying the world in a naturalistic manner.
To obtain an answer that satisfies your presupposition would be either rooted in mysticism itself, or would be ANY answer, NO MATTER HOW FALSE, that satisfies your own belief.
While what the rest of the educated, scientifical world has as its answer, to give it to you would possibly contradict your mysticism.
Such a simplistic view of how the world or nature is, would have one miss the beauty and fascination of the true complexities of life, when really understood.
Any of the biological sciences should shed some light for you, if you have an open mind to believe what the studies of intelligent minds throughout time have concluded.
Therein lies your answers.

I feel your logic is confused. basically you are stating that animals (humans included) gain their value from their ability to feel pleasure and pain. This type of ethic is associated with Peter Singer and is also used as reason that abortion is ethically permissible. I disagree wholeheartedly with this belief. Animals do not get their value by their ability to feel pleasure or pain, but rather by distinctive mental and physical capacities. Killing a dog or dolphin is more taboo than killing an ant, right? Does the ant feel less pain or no pain at all? Even if it felt a little bit of pain by your reasoning it would be immoral to kill that ant. While simultaneously a Terri Schiavo could have her feed tube removed, according to your ethic. The reason animals eat other animals is because that is what God uniquely created them to do.

Actually, in the beginning - the book of Genesis, it was like that - I don't recall any record of God commanding or even it being mentioned. They likely all ate vegies, grass, etc. It was after the fall of man that things changed. Man then didn't just eat vegies and fruit, they later ate meat. My assumption is, since God did state for Adam and Eve to eat only the fruit of the trees in the Garden of Eden (except the one tree), it is likely that the amimals lived under the same command - to not eat each other - but rather the grass or whatever else was there (because who really knows what was in that garden?). After Adam and Eve partook of the fruit, that is when the perfect world of Eden (the one God intended us all to live in) became the imperfect world we now live in. I don't think God intended to people or animals to eat meat - He didn't want His creation to eat His creation - but instead, they were to all live in perfect harmony (hard to comprehend in the world we live in today).

In the beginning, no animals ate each other. When Mankind sinned, and brought evil into the world, everything changed. Apparently, & I don't know if this is true, birds sing in a minor key.The Bible teaches that, when Jesus returns, their will be a new heaven and a new earth, and the lion will lie down with the lamb. Hope this helps.

Also, why did God make animals so tasty?
And another thing, when will humans stop being so selfish and end the senseless slaughter of plant life?
