yes I get it: the U.S. is a country that is made of states that are united!
But why not invent a real name for this country?

The Indians named it Turtle Island and that is the real name as far as I'm concerned.

What is your definition of a real name? I would say that the United States of America is a real name. I'd say that is a real name - perhaps a name that is made up of a phrase, not a word, but any collection of words can really be a name. Besides, it would be just weird and confusing to the world if we made up a completely new name.

It's the United States of America. Why isn't that good enough? There are states 50 UNITED states in North America and that's the way it is. What else would you call it?

It also wouldn't be a very good idea to change the name because of the confusion, and because it's what the people who lived before us called it. I think we owe it to them to keep the name of the country the same.

It really makes complete sense to keep it the way it is.

I can certainly think of quite a few that ARE applicable. But then, these "United States" NEVER have , in reality, been "United"... Where do you think the Civil War came from, out of a Japanese manga??? And Now, "East Coast" vs. "West Coast". WHAT dictionary defines any of THAT as "united"???

funny question.

but the fact is, all our cities were colonies before we were a country. Louisiana, Florida and Texas were different countries at one point, and half of the country even seceded during our history. i guess the name stands for unity, even though were put together piece by piece?

another example: the UAE, United Arab Emirates.

If the U.S. changed its name after this long, it would be ridiculous. Too much controversy. And the same question could be asked about the United Kingdom.

I think United States of America is sufficient, but maybe you can create a contest and have people submit ideas.

what would you call it instead? Disneyland? Oh, can't. That's already taken. How about Halliburtonland? No. Corporate Welfare States of North America? PNAC Puppet States of Saudi Arabia?
