I have a 20 gallon long, good air pump, power filter, thermometer-set at 78-80. I have medium sized aquarium gravel and 2 caves. 9-10 inch tall plants. I originally wanted convicts, hence the caves. But I dont want them to mess up my plants/ rock setup. I would like some type of cichlids, lol very general, but not angels. If I cant have cichlids I could settle for some common community tropicals. Thanks!

Apistogrammas or Rams would be an excellent choice of cichlids that would do well in that tank and not over disturb your decor.
With either type, you could also have a few tetras or other midwater to upper water swimmers like livebearers or killifish.

I know you said you didn't want the convicts to mess up the plants, but I'd still get them. They are one of the coolest of all SA cichlids and it's not very hard to fix the gravel in the tank. Get what you wanted in the first place and you will not be disappointed
Rams are a great suggestion if you are dead set against the convicts.

I would buy some tetras. They are nice and peaceful they won't mess up your aquarium set-up. Common goldfish would be a nice idea too. they are nice and big.

I would get rams they are nice small cichlid that would do well in your tank.

well you could set up a tank that looks like all the characters in the movie nemo!! that is what i would do
