Right now it is more of like a trend, just like Ipods.
Mac computers are mostly used for graphics and videos. They run a different Operating System, although you can install Windows on it. You pay for the way they look and for the brand name. I am not saying they are bad computers, they are alright......but honestly, most people that have them because they want to have what's in.
I suggest you do some research on them, so you get an idea of what kind of stuff they do and such. Just by asking people on here you'll only get PERSONAL opinions which it doesn't help much....yes, some users might love their Macs but that doesn't mean you'll love them too!. We all have different likes and dislikes. Go to the apple website to get a general idea, but you want to see some other websites too that have more specs and such!

It's really a little sad to see people sniping back and forth with their personal opinions over which is the best. It really doesn't matter, because a computer is only "best" for you if you can do the things you want. It's like arguing over which is better... a pickup truck, a minivan or a sports car? It depends on what you want to do, right?
I use both Macs and PCs, and have for years. I try to stay current and proficient because my career has depended on it as an information technology professional.
Having said that, the Mac is "better" because its operating system is based on Unix, which makes it more stable and secure. Apple controls both the hardware and operating system, so there are pretty much ZERO compatibility issues.
BUT
A PC is "better" because you'll find more software, more books and manuals, and more of your friends are likely to be running one. You'll also find more support from the online community, more devices which work on a PC, and so on.
You can do the same things on a Mac or a PC, you will just do it differently. If you can, try Apple before you buy, maybe at a school or library. Windows Vista has a lot of the features OS X has had for a while, so as of right now the systems behave similarly. (Although Vista still has a lot of issues... I'm waiting.)
You might also check into a version of Linux, such as Ubuntu, which is open-source, free, and therefore you're not tied to either the Microsoft or Apple platforms.
Anyway, long answer to a 23 year-old question. Hope it helps!

Well I've used a mac for ever. I still remember OS 6. Well the thing I like about the mac is how software, unlike on windows, wether it be made by a hobbyist or Corporation, or be free or commercial is always extremely well built. They have gorgeous graphics, they're stable and strong, and do what I want them to do.
Another thing I like is the computer itself, which has it's actual name not something like "Dell XPS 1927Q", but just something like iMac or Macbook. This shows that it's not just being made to make money, but the engineers want to make it. Also macs use highend material like Aluminum, glass, PolyCarbonate Plastics(Bullet Proof Glass) for their computers. One last thing to add is the fact that the harddrive "knows" if the Laptop is falling and it protects is itself.
Mac hardware, might seem more expensive, but the truth is servicing your mac is cheaper, there is less repairing, and software is at lower prices.
For instance Office cost about 200-300 dollars. On the mac you can get Office or you can get iWorks for $79, it has a word/page processor, a "powerpoint" application(that looks much better), and a spreadsheet app. There is also NeoOffice which you can download for free.
The last thing is: I use windows all the time, but the fact is everything always seems easier or faster on the mac. For instance, something that would take 8 clicks in XP, takes only 3 in Mac OS X.

Well when you match the spec, a PC and an apple come out the same.
In general though I would say that for the inexperienced user they are much easier to use than windoz machines, ask my Mum ;)
Adding hardware and networking is really easy and if you are doing any more advanced stuff the unix OS is a god send.
Oh and they look dead cool :-D
hope that helps

the Mac and the PC operating systems are fundamentally different
The PC system [ microsoft windows etc] was designed by people who had long term involvement with Mainframe computers [ used to be computers were larger than the average house] it was natural for them to try and adapt proven systems to this New Idea [ Historical Note Gates and partner developed the idea for a personal computer while working for IBM; technically IBM owned the idea since their employees had signed a contract stating patent rights to any ideas they developed belonged to the company; IBM decided the idea was without merit and signed over their rights to Gates and partner and Microsoft was born]
initially the PC was designed to be a remote off of mainframes so to speak and would have to be able to communicate with mainframes so some of the mainframe quirks remain. The initial concept of networked computers was to have all computers belonging to an organization communicating with each other. This open networked system was adapted to use the internet/www and is the primary reason the PC is so vulnerable to hackers.
the apple operating system was designed without the limitations of mainframe thinking to be a completely independant stable system.
The Mac is a much better system particularly for Graphics related use like photography
the PC system is more popular and has much more software written to run on it.

Unix BSD based operating system is far less vulnerable to viruses.
More flexible than a PC. Can run Mac OSX, Windows, Linux, and you are able to port Unix apps. No software is out of reach.
Apple makes the OS and the hardware, so everything works.
They're genius.

Mac ~ Slightly better OS, some software compatibility problems, same hardware.....and costs more
PC ~ Runs MS software, compatible with everything, uses the same hardware.....is cheaper
They are fighting over your desktop. The PC is the way to go if you don't know what you are doing. The Mac is only good if your company is paying for it.

I don't. I use one at work & I am not impressed. I am getting a new computer this week, & I am not looking at macs! If you want it for graphics, it is superior, it also has fewer problems with viruses (people hate Bill Gates) If you just want a computer, get the one that has stuff that YOU want, not what they want. You will be the one working on it.
Compare them side by side if you can...but since macs are only sold at mac stores, it will be tough.
good luck!

I would take a dell over a Mac any day.
Supposedly the Mac has better graphics, and is less likely to crash.
I think people get Mac’s to just be different...
it does no get viruses, spyware, or adware. intel macs can even run windows.
To the comment above, the programers that write the viruses are going to write it for a pc, not a mac
Also Windows owns Mac, bought them in @ 1995, 96
