The general socially accepted norm is that you don't order a complex drink when the bar is packed with people and the tenders are constantly running around. I for one would not want to wait for a bartender to mix up a cosmo to some girl's particular liking while all I want are just three beers. You probably don't want to wait any longer than you have to get your drinks, so why you want to make people do the same. Hot girls are usually exempt from this rule, but most patrons would not think too highly of you for doing that.

When I don't want an alcohol beverage, I generally order a glass of carbonated water with a twist of lime or lemon.
