I think this about sums it up...
Proverbs 6:16 – 19- These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
A proud look,
a lying tongue,
and hands that shed innocent blood,
A heart that deviseth wicked imaginations,
feet that be swift in running to mischief,
A false witness that speaketh lies,
and he that soweth discord among brethren.
This comes from a book that Bush "claims" to read every day. Maybe he missed that chapter...
To answer the question - hubris and greed - two mortal sins .

1) U.N., Democrats, Republicans, President Clinton, Saddam himself in communications to his allies up to three months before the invasion all claimed he had WMDs, most of them long before the Bush administration was in place. Saddam claimed he had them. We believed him. He even played games sufficiently with the U.N. to make them claim, clearly, that he was hiding the weapons.
2) Saddam tried to kill one of our Presidents. Who cares that it was President Bush's father. It was one of our Presidents.
3) We waited more than a decade for the U.N. to act on its statements of severe consequences for Saddam for continuing to block U.N. inspectors, break the cease-fire by firing on troops in the no-fly zone, and otherwise breaking the conditions of the cease-fire. We could have attacked any time. We waited more than ten years, letting him take pot-shots at our troops.
4) He was actively trying to get WMDs (above and beyond the chemical agents he used against the Kurds), a threat we could no longer wait on after 9/11 to avoid further proliferation of WMDs amongst nations who have stated outright that they want the United States destroyed.
5) They invaded one of our allies and made clear by their actions that they still saw nothing wrong with that and would do it again (Kuwait).
6) The paid suicide bombers (through their families) with Saddam on television offering sums of cash for anyone who attacked civilians in Israel.
No spin. All facts. There are several for NOT going in as well. If you want I can point out the mistakes as well, but there were reasons for going in. Our last three Presidents were NOT idiots, and are not idiots, and have access to the newest intelligence and technology. Second guessing them as civilians with less than a tenth of the data is just silly.
There are also a number of reasons for going to war that others would disagree with, such as:
1) Protecting our oil interests.
It's been popular amongst those who put their ideology ahead of their countries interest to see big business as an evil (despite the power and standard of living it has allowed for people in our country) due to a very strong socialist influence in the democratic party (not my own idea, actually, but the Socialist Party of America's idea when they split in three parts and decided they would use the Democratic party as one branch of their party, please check the Wikipedia entry under "split" under "Socialist Party of America").
Big business/capitalism/the American Dream is hated by some who want a socialist state, government controlled, rather than free enterprise/competition/independence.
We protected our business interests by going into Iraq. I'm a capitalist (not rich, just a teacher, as I don't have much ambition) and see no reason to let other nations nationalize our business interests with impunity like Saddam tried to do with his invasion of Kuwait.
I'm not that self-destructive, thank you.
Still, we need brakes. Although I am a Democrat in favor of this war, we need my party to serve as brakes, to speak up (hopefully without the playground name-calling and other political bigotry that President Clinton and President Bush have had to deal with) about what we believe and want to make our country stronger, better, etc.
Except for the last comment, which was a pre-emptive attempt to tell everyone that it doesn't matter what they tell you because it's all spin if it disagree with you, it was a worthy question to ask.
Get past that last bit of political bigotry and you'll go far here.
