I give it one try, and if they don't pick themselves up and dust themselves off and do what needs to be done, I am through. But, if they don't give up on themselves, I won't give up on them. That's the deal!

No. People need to realize that no one can make their problems go away but themselves. I'm not going to waste my time and energy on someone who just wants pity. I'm all for helping people, but they HAVE to help themselves.

I was an addict/alcoholic for years and years. I can tell you from experience that it does no good to try to help someone who doesn't want the help. You have to let them fall flat on their face enough times to where they'll reach their hand out for help.
As a good citizen, you want to "help". But the only way to help is to let them hit rock bottom.

No, I guess they should start first by helping themselves before seeking other's help.

Unfortunately, yes. It can get very frustrating, but maybe my feeble efforts to get them to see that life could be better (than how they are living it) will actually bring forth some positive results.

At least that's what I keep telling myself.

I used to but not anymore. You just waste your time. They have to really mean it when they ask for help.
