I am absolutely amazed at how ignorant many of the respondants who answer here are about our government. Some of the quotes from some of these answers are so woefully lacking in civics knowledge that the answers are laughable.

So my question here is what has happened to civics education in this country? Why does it no longer exist?

Well, being a history teacher I can tell you a whole lot. What excatly do you want to know? Do you want to know how math and English are the only two subjects most schools really focus on because theya re the ones on the standardized tests? Do you want to know how most Americans today only want to be entertained rather than actually becoming informed and taking charge of their government? Maybe you want to hear how Marxist philosophy is alive in well in the American mind causing us to beleive that government is someone else's job and if there is really a problem someone else will take care of us? Look at how many Americans beleive the stuff Michael Moore puts out. They love it because it fits what they want to beleive and it is packaged into a nice neat hour and a half film.

Civics is the study of government / political theory. How would the government benefit by teaching about political theory? The less a generation knows about governments and political theory, the better for the current government. Right?

Yeah, I think it's BS. I graduated in 2000. At that point civics was only an elective given once a year...

Civics, as you (I assume) and I remember it, is an embarassment to the established left. Civics, when properly taught, espouses patriotism, individual participation in our democratic republic, knowledge of our U.S. constitution, U.S. history (the real thing, NOT what is fed to the children today), and a host of other ideas that are dangerous to socialism.

That is what happened and why civics no longer exists as a school subject.

Now, want to talk about history?

Not to mention History! You should take a look at the textbooks - 1 page on George Washington and a whole chapter on Marilyn Monroe. Education was one of the first institutions destroyed by the commies within.
