Ya, they're always giving them away for free on craigslist.org. You could get a decent one, you'd never know - people who give away pianos for free mustn't know much about them.

If at all possible get a hands-on experience with the piano you are thinking of purchasing before you spend money. Grab a piano technician or at least a friend that can honestly evaluate the value of the instrument. ... remember that pianos are slightly on the heavy side of things and your 100 pound piano may cost you an additional 250 pounds to move its 400 pound bulk across the country and up and down stairs.

I don't know what area you live in, so I can't suggest a specific store, but I can suggest a really nice, cheap piano. The piano is called a BOSTON piano, and for the price of it, it sounds amazing! The keys are so easy to play, they're really smooth, and it echoes slightly. It is an upright. A really good Grand piano is a YAMAHA. Yamaha's are my second favorite piano (Steinway's are my favorite, of course) because they have such a nice tone and touch.
Hope this helps!!! ☺

Call piano tuners in your area.
They usually know about lots of used pianos for sale. Just tell them how much you're willing to spend, and if you can wait a while, they can usually find something for you in your price range that will also be playable, and not ready to become firewood.

For under $400 , you can get an M-Audio 88sx electric piano. We also have a VERY good Steinway grand in this house - of course they are not the same, but the M-Audio is DECENT!!! www.musiciansfriend.com

Any electronics store. Just get a keyboard for now. Those are way cheaper than buying an actual piano.

check your local classified ads usually under "music" or something similar.
music stores also often have ads for lessons, used instruments, and much more.
sometimes thrift stores have decent used pianos
