Good browsing habits are the most important. Stay off of porn and pirate software sites and it'll be fine.

Before you connect your computer to the internet make sure that you have antivirus software and a firewall installed. These will need updating as soon as you connect to the internet.
Norton, McAffee and Sophos are good brands for these programs. Windows does have a firewall, so make sure this is turned on.
Also, as soon as you connect to the internet you should run Windows Update, which is in the Start Menu. This will update all the system files on your computer.
You will need to run, restart the PC and re-run this several times, especially if you have Windows XP.
Adaware and Spybot are good, free, programs to keep your PC safe from malicious software once you are up and running.

Obviously that's not true. If you want to be extra safe you can just buy a new anti-virus program on a cd like McAfee so you don't even need to connect to the internet. Of course, windows already comes with a firewall, and in the maybe 1 minute of internet connection to download an anti-virus program there's really no chance of damage, but McAfee is good anyway.

well, when you get it out of the box, you can set it up. without connecting it to the internet.
and if you bought an antivirus like norton or others, you could install the antivirus before you connect to the internet. of course you will eventually have to connect to the internet to update the computer, but my advice is to install the anti virus before you connect to the internet.
