Yeah pretty much. They start out feeling exactly like period cramps but gradually become more intense. It feels like your uterus is soo tight that it's going to rip into!

a contraction... there are two types of contractions that most people dont know about..
I had braxton hicks contractions for a month before I went in labor and didnt even know it!
It feels like the baby is pushing against your stomach and it hardens for a while. It's not really painful at first, but when you get it often (braxton hicks) it gets sore as if you had done a million pushups.
The other type of contrations is called back labor. This is when you are in labor, and you have extreme back pain, and lower abdominal cramps. I had back labor, very different than the contractions I was used to having for almost 2 months prior.
I didnt realize I was having contractions, as I was expecting my stomach to tighten up and hurt, until the doctor told me my back pain and cramps was contractions.

Yes that sounds like contractions.
I had one child without medication and the other 2 with as much as they'd give me.....
When I gave birth unmedicated at first it was small tight squeezes, as labor progressed I felt like an almost empty tube of toothpaste...you know when you pinch the tube and squeeze downward to get the last bit....
Get an epidural. You'll love it!!!

To tell you the truth, its so hard to explain what a contraction feels like to anyone, and I love your description which doesn't really help anyone who has never had one, so yeah I reckon you are contracting . Good Luck if it's labour and Good Luck for later if it Braxton Hicks

As my wife described it, it's like menstrual cramps but much worse, and it radiates toward your back & legs, and they become more frequent, more intense, and last longer as time goes by.

Yup, sounds like it. But they may be braxton-hicks contractions, not true labour... only way to tell is if they're getting more intense and more frequent.

I agree with all the answers. It is a most horrible pain but you will forget all about after you hold that sweet little one in your arms.
