I Am A Rock
Paul Simon
A winter's day-
in a deep and dark December
I am alone-
Gazing from my window to the streets below
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow.
I am a rock, I am an island.
I've built walls,
A fortress deep and mighty
That none may penetrate
I have no need of friendship
friendship causes pain
It's laughter and its loving I disdain
I am a rock, I am an island
Don't talk of love
but I've heard the word before
It's sleeping in my memory
I won't disturb the slumber of the feelings that have died
If I never loved I never would have cried
I am a rock, I am an island
I have my books
and my poetry to protect me
I am shielded in my armour
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb,
I touch no one and no one touches me.
I am a rock, I am an island
And a rock feels no pain, and an island never cries.

It’s the heart afraid of breaking that never learns to dance, it’s the dream afraid of waking that never takes a chance. It’s the mind afraid of losing that never learns to give and it’s the soul afraid of dying that never learns to live
Someday someone will walk into your life and make you realize why it didnt work out with anyone else

Hmmm... Wise, perhaps. More realistic might be:
A heart that's been broken too many times gets tired of taking chances.

⥠Those words definetly make you think, however I dont agree with that... I was paranoid of my heart being broken and I took a chance when I met my fiance. So far its turned out great! :-)

I agree
If you do not take a chance at your heart being broken
Then you will not know success when it is spoken.
We should shoot for the stars for that is our goal
It is good for our body, mind, and soul.

A child afraid of touching a stove has been burnt before.
Broken hearts need to heal before they can beat properly...

Yes. I agree and a faint heart never won a fair maiden either. Another classic: "it is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all".

Very true!!!! If you never go out and love then you will live like a hermit, a person has to take chances to "live".

I think that is from the song 'the rose'. If you never fall and love you will never know the true joy of life.
