actually if you look back way back - each cave-woman would have a cave and cavemen would go from cave to cave - taking care of business and getting taken care of
we're genetically 'built' that way
several hundred years ago - the combination of the religious movement and the sense that if we are civilized we have to discard the habits of the past - completely changed what is expected of us - not what we are capable of -
so you see monogamy was thrown on us - we're not built for it - but yet we are expected to live within its bounds - this creates all sorts of nasty habits and brings out the worst in us - for instance would two guys ever fight over a girl if they each had like 6 chicks they dated - hell no
would a guy be INSANELY jealous that other guys are looking at or interested in his wife if he had 8 their wives - no he wouldn't

Society has to look out for its own future. The idea of any single male or female creating too many off spring will damage the genetic makeup of a community because the odds of brother and sister mating then increases which could then weaken the genetic diversity which keeps humans being healthy. Look at bush man tribes in Africa where their has be so much inbreeding that physical mutations have formed or the royal families that have blood disorders a mental disorders. Society wants monogamy for the protection of itself to ensure genetic diversity for the future generations.

This taboo is born of nothing less than blatant intolerance. People build their own world of what should and should not be done, because they cannot feel secure in an open world. When something violates this world of values they've built for themselves, they lash out at that something.
Ignore such people. If what you're doing doesn't hurt anyone, then don't just give in and become a mindless societal drone. Some societal taboos--i.e. incest, which can create some pretty f*cked up children--have reasons; others do not. If you are not monogamous and neither are your partners, then more power to you--do what you wish.

Because our human psyche is not built to handle it. Monogamy works really good for raising families so we built it into our culture as the best practice. Of course, some ignore that at the expense of the kids.

To be honest, I have no idea. I guess, lots of social, historical and evolutionary factors got us to where we are now, it would be hard to isolate just one or two. There's no objective reason why monogamy is "better".

because of this little thing called AIDS, and HERPES, and did I mention AIDS can kill you, IDIOT!
not only that, there are many more things out there can permantly change and ruin your life for having these so called "brief" relationships, so I would think that would be the taboo part.
