Yes, it's bad and it doesn't stall because either your tires act as the clutch (burning rubber) or the clutch slips for a while (wearing the clutch) or both.

It is not good, puts a lot of stress on the drivetrain parts, it wont last near as long and uses more gas.
It doesnt stall because the engine is making more power than is required to overcome the stationery inertia of the vehicle.
If you had that same engine in a truck and did the same thing, the extra weight would cause the engne to stall.
And driving this way makes other ppl think you dont know how to drive properly, it makes you look like a very poor driver.

Because you've built enough kinetic energy with in the drive train to keep the engine from reaching stall speed before the car moves. (Which is a lot of energy and stresses the drive train)

It's about balancing the clutch and gas, and when you let one out and hold on in all the way, it balances them. But yes, it's bad.
