1.) To get the rain away from your house so the foundation isn't ruined.
2.) So the rain doesn't pour down your back when you go to open the door during a strong rain.
3.) To help prevent your portions of your house from potentially flooding, like the basement.
4.) To prevent soil erosion next to the house.

Gutters divert the water away from your foundation, hopefully. The purpose of rain gutters is to take rain from the waterproof roof, move it away from the vulnerable wood right below the roof. It channels all of that water and safely places it on a lawn or at least a more desirable location. Without gutters a heavy rain storm can damage your woodwork, fascia, lawn, or even flood a basement.

So that when it rains, the water doesn't just run off the edges of the roof and into the ground right next to your house. Having extra water near the foundation can cause problems.
Most gutters cause rainwater to hit the ground some distance away from the house/foundation.

It keeps the rain from running down the foundation of your house,
it can cause your house to sink if water stand against the house foundation very long,
plus if you have a basement it can put to much pressure on the basement wall when the ground gets saturated and push the walls in , not to mention basement wall leaks, Gutters are well worth the investment.
I hope I have answered your question.

Homes need gutters to direct the water flow from the rooves to the ground in the most efficient manner. Also, they allow you to control where the water runs off, so it doesn't just dump on you when you're trying to open your front door in the rain - you get wet enough from the rain!

they protect the lawn and flowerbeds around the house by diverting rainwater runoff to a specific point. without gutters, it would just run down the roof and damage the ground. If you see a house without gutters look around at the roofline. you will see depressions in the ground where rainwater has fallen and tore up the ground.

erosion around a foundation can cause serious foundation problems. in a established yard with established beds and shrubs they arent as nessicary, but still somewhat important. the grass and roots will keep the soil from eroding. also water flowing off the valleys of a roof will quickly dig holes in the ground and you will have standing water at each valley. this can lead to mold on the inside of your drywall.

One reason is to keep the water from running off the roof and eroding the ground directly below. The second and main reason is to keep the water from seeping underneath your eaves and leaking inside your walls. This could cause mold and rot before you even see the symptoms. They also prevent water streaks on the side of your house.

To direct the water flow away from areas that don't need the water.I also think to keep you from walking under a door way and getting rained on...
