Well, if you haven't played FFX, don't play FFX-2. It is a direct sequel, and the story will make no sense to you. I've heard many people complain about FFX-2, but I enjoyed it. I like how it ties up all the loose storyline left at the end of FFX.
FFXII is an incredible game, and I highly recommend it. It has a stand-alone storyline, so it doesn't matter if you've ever played any other FF games.

I like most of the people going to answer this question have been a fan of the FF series from day 1 on the NES.
I was slightly disappointed with FFX-2 but I still recommend playing it though.
FFXII was very good and was a long awaited new game in the series as it was a looooong break between FFX and FFXII. Don't get me wrong I do know there was a FFX2 (gap filler) and FFXI (computer game only) WTF? The FF series should have NEVER made the jump to a computer platform and to this day will never buy or play FFXI.
But to answer your question again. Buy both and enjoy them as I have.

X2 was definitely not worth it. It is no where near as good as X. XII is very good and unlike X it goes back many older Final Fantasy themes where the storyline revolves around a war.
