I was wondering what it's for.
It pops out if you want it to, and it's got these three different sides holes in it.
The symbol for it is this rectangular box that's supposed to look like it's moving.

Does anyone know what it's for?
I'm thinking memory cards and such, but I'm definitely not sure...

that is your PC card slot. It is an expansion slot that can be used for anything from a memory card reader to a wireless network card.

So you were pretty much right for what it can be used for.

Hello; This could be an available PCMCIA slot, for you to add a wifi card to, or a cellular provider wifi card... they also make USB cards that will fit into that slot. This pcmcia slot is about 2" wide, and when you pull it out, is about 3" long... Most PCs will have a blank plastic card in there, so the slot isn't open for dust & debris to collect.

If you're curious as to what else they make in the PCMCIA format, go to ebay and do a search for pcmcia, and see what comes up, it might be fun!

I hope this answers your question!;

It is a card reader. It allows you to insert the memory cards from digitals cameras and other eletronics and download their contents to your computer without having to somehow attach the entire camera or other device.
