There are a wide variety of cleaning items available at pet shops. Most work rather well and they vary widely in proce depending on the type of device you select. Using something designed for aquariums would be the best and safest bet.

Cleaning an aquarium - Cleaning an aquarium is very important to the health of your fish. Okay, step away from the aquarium and put the fish net down. Do not remove the fish. Doing this only stresses out the fish. What you need to do is bring out the gravel vacuum. You will also need a 5-gallon bucket. After you have this, follow the instructions on starting the vacuum. Once started, go over the gravel. Caution: not to suck up the fish, decorations, or get the gravel clogged in the vacuum. Doing this should remove about 1/3 of the water. Empty the "dirty" water. Use a clean bucket to fill up the aquarium after treating it with the proper aquarium water conditioner; I prefer AquaSafe. That's how simple cleaning an aquarium can be.

All you actually need to do is:
1. Siphon out visible dirt from the bottom. (dont rake up the gravel / pebbles)
2. Change 25% of the water.

Just follow this regimen every week and you'll have a clean aquarium.

For cleaning the glass? If so, Magfloats work great. They consist of two magnets. One goes inside the tank while the other on the outside that you can then move around the glass. If your tank is acryllic make certain you buy the one specific for acryllic tanks to keep it from scratching.
