1. Uninstall all programs you no longer use. Start Menu > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.
2. Do a disk clean up: Start Menu > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup.
3. Do a disk check:
Windows XP: Start Menu > Run. Type chkdsk /f . You will probably have to type Y, so that the computer will do this when you next reboot.
Windows 98: Start Menu > Programs > Accessories > System tools > ScanDisk.
4. Defragment your drive: You should have at least 15% free disk space to do this properley. Start Menu > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter.

You may also want to try Spybot and Adaware, which are programs that will find malicious software on your PC. These are free to download online.

Try downloading the free Microsoft Spybot Search and Destroy spyware program. It will eliminate the spyware and adware that can be taking CPU effort and making the machine run slower.

BTW a lot of stores have sales on RAM (like $50 for a one gig memory) so it doesn't take much to do a small hardware upgrade that pays big dividends.

Defragmenting your hard drive is a good place to start, Disk Clean Up will help as well as CCleaner. Adding more RAM will definitely speed up your computer's speed a lot (I've 8 SDRAM 128MB spares here and 2 SIMM's of 72MB each) Need one?
