Soft-soled shoes, until he's walking well enough that he's wearing through the soles. Babies/toddlers learn to walk better/faster if they're allowed to go barefoot (if it's safe, of course) or have soft-soled shoes.

It's actually best for their feet not to wear shoes that much... but if they absolutely have to wear shoes go with the soft sole until they are walking on their own (no support) and rarely fall when walking. That was at about 12 months for my little girl that we moved her to hard soles. The soft soles were actually causes he to fall more often at that time because they were so slick bottomed and would slip on the floor of the daycare.

When he's actually walking on his own, not just "cruising" by holding on to hands or furniture to walk, then he should be taken to a shoe store and have his feet properly measured and fitted for hard soled shoes.

Actually, docs don't recommend putting shoes on your child until AFTER they learn to walk well.
Shoes effect the way the baby's foot moves when learning to walk. Best to leave the shoes off.

Soft soled shoes (or barefoot) are better- they allow the baby to feel the ground beneath them and develop their sense of feeling and balance better.

there was an issue of parenting that i read once that said it's actually better to let them learn how to walk barefooted. and to not even put shoes on them until they are walking outside. i tried it with my youngest and she started walking by herself at 8 months. good luck

There are prewalker shoes and the baby stages. They will be the right shoes so you dont have to worry about it.
