It was a place between life and death, and the reason why Harry saw it as Kings Cross was because to him, that's sort of a portal between two different worlds, the magical one and the Muggle one. He was sort've dead, because he had the option of 'boarding a train' to actual death, but he chose not to. I think he had the option because the Horcrux inside him kept his soul intact, so he could still live.

It think it was sort of an area between life and death. Harry could not die as long as Voldemort lived because he had some of Harry's blood so Harry was being held in a state of limbo. He could choose to go back and fight Voldemort or go somewhere else. Wizarding world is different from ours so it doesn't seem out of order that he could have a conversation with Dumbledore.

I think he kind of went into a Limbo part place and I think for a little while at least, Harry was technically dead while the horcrux in him was 'escaping'.

That scene was happening in Harry's head. I agree with those whom wrote above me, Harry was in a limbo between life and death, keep in mind, Dumbledore asked Harry whether he wanted to return to life or not (although I don't think he had a choice but to.)

As I recall, Harry 'woke up' without any clothes on, and kind of wandered into an airy, light-filled place, saw Dumbledore there and they talked. Harry also saw a little, wiggly thing there and worried about it, but Dumbledore told Harry he couldn't help that little thing and to forget it. (I figure it was what was left of Voldy)
Anyway, it seems to me they were in a spirit realm of some kind, huh?

JK Rowling answer this question herself during the interview on NBC. She said it was limbo, a place between life and death.
