I'm sure now that Bonds has broken the record the swell of Pete Rose questions will once again arise.

To me this is a dead issue and it should stay that way. There is no way you give someone a profession's highest honor (in this case the Hall of Fame) if they are banned from working in that profession because they broke the mother of all rules. You cannot separate the two. You can't very well honor someone with the right hand while locking them out with the left.

It's irrelevant that Rose didn't bet against his team. It's irrelevant that he has the most career base hits of any player. It's irrelevant that the betting occurred after he retired as a player. What is relevant is that he bet on baseball while employed by Major League Baseball. A clerk who works in an office for MLB and never attends a game cannot bet on baseball without losing his/her job. Why should Rose get a pass? Because he hustled? Because he was a dynamic player? Of course not. It has nothing to do with it.

Sorry, Pete. You were fun to watch, but when you screwed up you chose the worse possible way in which to screw up. It's a shame, yes. But he knew what he was doing and now he's paying the price.

No, Rose SHOULDN'T be reinstated. Now we SHOULD use this energy for something constructive I'll agree. Pete Rose bet on the game. He KNEW it was AGAINST THE RULES. That RULE is above the door of every clubhouse, or something like that. Anyway HE KNEW. Beyond the fact that he was a player and MANAGER so he should have known anyways. Rose broke the rules. Rose was told by the Commissioner at that time that if he ADMITTED to betting on baseball the Commish would consider reinstating him. He chose to WAIT until he could make money off it. Then he comes out the DAY of the HoF inductions and take their thunder. Oh and he can no longer be put on the ballot, except the old-timers ballot or veteran's committee or whatever they want to call it. He CHOSE to come out for his LAST YEAR. Not letting him back in baseball after his behavior is probably hte only thing Selig has done right.

Yeah, good idea.

Here's another, which will yield just as many useful outcomes: liquidate your entire property base, down to your last set of clothes. Take the paper money and burn it, then dump the coins down the nearest storm sewer or any convenient fountain (for preference, one that periodically collects the munny for children's charities).

Rose still won't be reinstated, but you'll have demonstrated sterling committment to the cause.

Rose can be reinstated when (a) he is innocent or (b) when "permanent" expires, since that is the defined length of his ineligibility.

Why would you want someone that bet while he was a manager to be reinstated?

Maybe you don't know enough about the situation.

EDIT: No, I think he's getting exactly what he deserves. He took a lifetime ban knowing it would also ban him from the Hall until he was reinstated, so the evidence of his gambling wouldn't be made public. He also lied about it for YEARS, until he wrote a book, then all of a sudden he wanted to "come clean".

No, Rose is fine being banned from the HOF.
He bet on baseball and that could have put individual careers in jeopardy.
He knew what he was doing, he needs to be resposible for his actions.

Yes, I think Pete Rose should go into the Hall of Fame-he bet as a manager, not as a player

I think we should use all this energy to help others. Like work in a soup kitchen, or do a fundraiser for a charity

While I agree that it is a waste of energy to try to get Bonds banned, I think that it would be nearly as big a waste to try to get Rose reinstated.

I disagree. Pete broke the rules. Barry maybe broke a moral code but that's it.

I feel Pete Rose belongs in the hall of fame because of his on field play. I also feel a lifetime ban is warranted for his crimes, and he should never be allowed to manage again.
