We have a 94 Ford Econoline Van with 110,000 miles. A few weeks ago we used it to go to a store, and when we came out of the store it wouldn't turn over and start. The engine was getting juice, since the radio played. AAA couldn't start it either, and towed it to a garage. The garage went ahead and did the annual inspection on the van, and said it started fine for them. They kept it for two days, and said they never had a problem starting the engine. Well, here we are a month later, and one of my kids just called to say he's stranded in the van since the same thing has happened again. The garage suggested we get it towed to them again. Any ideas? My kid says he turns the key and the radio comes on, but the engine is completely dead.

Check the neutral safety switch. It may be out of adjustment or malfuntioning. On automatic transmisions the vehicle must be in park or neutral. On standard transmisions the clutch must be engaged. If switches are out of adjustment or bad the vehicle will not start.

The radio playing is not a good indication of the battery strength. My best guess is the ignition switch or the neutral safety switch is failing you. Try to shift the van into neutral the next time it has a no start situation see if it starts then.

Good luck

I have a Ford Taurus and the car died on my daughter. AAA and IDOT could not start it (all electricals worked). It was towed to a mechanic who was able to start it the next day but then it didn't hold. It was the fuel pump, not the starter.

Now that it won't start again, the mechanic has a much better chance of finding the starting problem. He'll find a poor starter, starter relay,or electrical connection. It is in need of updating those things a a cost of around $400.

Battery might have some juice, but not enough to crank the motor. I'd have them load test the battery to see if it's putting out enough amps. Otherwise, your starter or starter solenoid might be dying, or you might have a bad connection somewhere.

You probably have a dead spot in the starter. If there is a place nearby that does it, it's cheaper to get it rebuilt.

Probably a starter or starter bendix/solenoid going bad.

yup, it's a starter problem, econolines are notorious for bad starters, ours did the same thing.
