I say garden but really it's a tiny (2 meters by 3 meters) cobbled courtyard. It's walled off and has plants round the perimeter, mostly year long greens, ivy and some seasonal flowers.
There's a small fountain in the wall which has fresh water.

Now I put out bread every day and get the most adorable little birds, I'd love to do more (am a sucker for animals) so is there anything else? Do I have to wait till winter for balls of seeds?

You should not be feeding the birds too much bread. Any bread you do feed them should be dried (stale). Birds digestive system is not designed to break down bread properly.

Seed is the best way to attract birds.

You have at least 2 conditions for attracting birds; water and variety of folliage.

Here is a link which has some good suggestions. It is for North America but applies to almost anywhere with some minor adjustments and varients.

Good Luck.

Different kind of seeds being offered will bring big and small types of birds. Plants will attract them too. Plants with berries or flowers are very good for them. Put up a bird house or two.
