Find a place that will recycle it, because computers have metals and chemicals that are harmful to have in regular landfills.

Check with your local government policy on recycling computers. At least in my area, only certain landfills take computer equipment so they can recycle the content. If you have a vendor built system (Dell, HP, etc...), some offer recycling programs too.
If the computer is still in fairly usable condition, consider donating it to local groups (shelters, schools, etc...). If the computer is very old though, look to recycle.

rebuild, clean it up, fresh operating system install, donate the machine to sally anne or something like that... (sally ann is a battered womans shelter)
also alot of trade schools tend to be happy to get older components as they use them for classes like A+
