There are a lot of very cool things you can do with polymer clay that you can add to cards... in fact, some people even make whole postcards with it. If you use a "strong" brand, you can make the clay very thin too, and it will be virtually unbreakable (some strong brands are Premo, FimoClassic, Kato and Cernit, and to a lesser extent FimoSoft.... but not Sculpey).
The colors, patterns, textures, and special effects, etc., possible are practically endless with polymer clay too.
If you want to try some polymer clay, check out this page for lots of info and ideas:

I watch scrapbooking shows on PBS and use some of those ideas to make cards.
Using a template, trace and cut out 4 small hearts. Arrange the hearts with the points facing in, to look like a flower. Glue those together, and glue a craft flower in the center.
Once you start, one idea makes you think of other ideas.

I think pop up cards are fun and different. There are a slew of sites that offer free cards of this kind that you can print out. I'll offer one site. You can decorate the cards any way you wish, to make them more personal.
