How it got started is not the problem with which you have to deal. Worry about that later. Right now, you need to concentrate on how to stop it. I've seen enough of your questions to know that you are a young man, but even so, the clock is ticking on your life. Set a goal - and stick to it. The success of having achieved that goal will be the basis of not looking back because after that you need to set another goal. For me, life has been a series of goals. I did not achieve them all, but learned from every single failure and applied that experience to the next goal. You can to. Asking questions about it is all well and good, but at some point you need to get off your b*tt and do something about your situation.

Personal note: Matthew, I don't know you, but I have confidence in you that you can be who and what you want to be. You're going through some confusion in your life at this point, but it will pass - don't pass with it.

When one has low self-esteem, one begins to dislike oneself and starts asking questions about one's ability to carry out different tasks vital in one's life! Poor self-esteem is also at the centre of many of the difficulties one experiences in one's relationships too! Confidence boosting measures are essential to overcome such a situation.
