Check engine light has nothing to do with the engine. It has to do with emissions. Check to see if the gas cap is on right. Try using a good fuel injector cleaner next time you fill up. It could also be a faulty o2 sensor nothing to worry about read your owners manual. Changing the timing belt is regular maintenance and should be done every 45-50k miles. Yes they are trying to ripe you off go elsewhere.

I have owned Subs for 20 years, even before timing belts, I have a mechanic that works on only Subs and he has done at least 4 timing belts for me. I have never had a failed water or oil pump. My mechanic has never mentioned changing either when doing the Timing belt. Isn't the oil pump in the oil pan? If it is and I always thought it was (could be wrong). Then replacing it would probably mean pulling the engine. You don't need to pull the engine to do a timing belt. I run all my cars into the ground. The most miles I have gotten was 180K out of a 1987 Legacy wagon. I bought this car new. I had to change the timing belt twice and the clutch once. It was carburated and the throttle shaft bearings wore out. I would have needed a new carb so I junked it. With fuel injection this is not a problem now. DON'T replace the oil pump. If you are up around 150K replace the water pump. Otherwise don't worry about it. One Sub engine, the 2.5 maybe, is an interference engine and the valves & pistons will collide if the belt breaks. The other engines will just conk out and be O.K. after you replace the belt. WOW! I just did some research and the Oil Pump does appear to be on the outside! Still I wouldn't change it. However I just remembered that the cam seals and also maybe the crank seal are prone to leakage and are usually replaced when the belt is done. He's that good and honest as the day is long. I do remember the belt tensioner pully bearing is also another thing that ought to be checked. Its a MA number. But he will advise you.

No, the computer has no way to tell if the timing belt needs replacement or not. There is something else making the engine light come on. I would ask the mechanic what codes were retrieved off your vehicles computer. Those usually have the 2.5, which should get a new timing belt every approx 100,000 miles. The water pump is not totally necessary but isn't a bad idea, since if it goes out it will break the timing belt and damage the engine. Typical cost for belt and pump will typically range from 600-1200, depending on what else they find (cam seals, front main seal, oil pump seal, tensioner and idler pulleys) once they open it up.

The combination of a timing belt and water pump is typically between $300-$400.
