He touched an improperly grounded electric fan as he was stepping out of the bathtub. It does not appear to be a suspicious death.

thomas merton died in a terrible accident. He was in a restaurant somewhere in Asia and there was an old ceiling fan that was twirling around. It came loose and spiraled toward him and one of the blades sliced him up (maybe in the neck).

i think it was an accident; no evidence of foul play. he was a good friend of a good friend of mine, i really wanted to meet him. /i think what i heard was he was electrocuted by an electrical short in a microphone. / says in wikipedia he was electrocuted when stepping out of his bath, in Bangkok, Thailand.
