I kind of know what it is, but how does it relate to AdSense? Does it pay when the ad is viewed one thousand times or something? Thanks.

Google says you get paid when a CPM ad gets placed on your site. Doesn't this mean you just get paid even though no one clicks the ads? Or do people have to actually visit the site? And do you get paid every time the ad is viewed or just when the ad get's 1000 views? Does that mean you have to have 1000 (or more) visitors to your site?

I suggest you go to Google Adsense, click on 'help', then start asking questions. There is a lot of information available.
This is the 1st return when you ask 'CPM':
What are CPM ads?
CPM stands for "cost per 1000 impressions." Advertisers running CPM ads set their desired price per 1000 ads served, select the specific sites on which to show their ads, and pay each time their ad appears.

For publishers, this means revenue in your account each time a CPM ad is served to your page. CPM ads compete against pay-per-click (or CPC, cost per click) ads in our ad auction, so only the highest performing ads will be served to your pages. Advertisers will need to bid a higher CPM than the existing CPC ads in order to show.

CPM ads can be either text or image ads, and are always site-targeted. CPM text ads will expand to take up the entire ad unit. These expanded text ads can be viewed on our Ad Formats page.

The CPM model refers to advertising bought on the basis of impression. This is in contrast to the various types of pay-for-performance advertising, whereby payment is only triggered by a mutually agreed upon activity (i.e. click-through, registration, sale).
