After a time, the placenta starts to fail and can no longer provide nutrients and oxygen to the baby. So there is a "point of no return" where they really do have to go get the baby or the baby will die. It's probably closer to 42 weeks than the earlier time frame used by most doctors, but they have their insurance companies to appease.
Also, the bigger the baby, the more stress on the mother's body, and the more risk for toxemia and other serious problems...which can lead to death of both the mother and child.
So, any woman who is overdue ought to be very closely monitored and a c-section or induction is not out of the question.

Because doctors are impatient and believe they know everything.
in fact, a Due Date is actually an ETA and not based on factual evidence, as sperm can live for a few days, fertilisation can infact happen a few days after sex,.. another point to make is that the embryo does not begin to develop until the egg has been embedded in the wall of the uterus (or fallopian tube, as happens with ectopic pregnancies)
that being the case, the ETA can be up to a week and a half off in many cases.
the only time that Labour is forced is if there are signs that the Foetus is struggling, atleast, thats how its supposed to work.
seriously though, women have been having babies for along time and many have been so called overdue, with little to no problems.
infact, there are starting to find links between C-Sections and certain illnesses.
C-sections are also known to decrease the chance to breastfeed in some mothers.

I can tell you from the experience of my former mother in law. She and her doctor disagreed on how far along she was. She kept trying to tell him she was farther than he thought (this was before routine ultrasounds). When the baby was finally born, the nutrition had stopped. He nearly died.
As for me, I went almost two weeks past my due date. Because of this, my little girl was almost ten pounds and I ended up having to have a c-section, like it or not.
So, the baby can get too big to come out on her own and the nutrition apparently doesn't last forever. Hope that helps.

If an OB allows a (otherwise healthy) pregnancy to exceed 42 weeks gestation they are guilty of malpractice. The reason for this is after 42 weeks the placenta begins to degenerate and conditions become unfavorable for a baby to thrive in the womb. Oxygen and nutrient levels begin to deplete and a baby CAN sufficate or starve to death.

After a certain time in the mothers womb the placenta stops or slows down providing nourishment hence it could starve the baby or posion as the placenta cleans/purifys all the bad crap hence induction to make the baby safe

Because it can become dangerous for both mother and baby. The fluid can become low and there isnt all that much room in there. Doctors wont let you go past 42 weeks.

B/c after awhile the placenta dies off and doesn't do as good of a job. It's dangerous to leave the baby in there past 40 weeks b/c of that.

The baby would get to big there would be alot more c-section in the world if they did not .It would be unhealthily to mom and baby to let it go pass 42 weeks .
