Christmas is celebrated on 2 days - December 25th and 26th.

Many restaurants have special christmas dinners, and many will be by reservation only.
There are some christmas parties (never visited one).

The 26th, more stores will be open, but on the 25th, expect not many to be open at all.

Best way to spend christmas in Amsterdam?
Meet with friends / loved ones and go out for dinner, attend a christmas service, or just spend quality time together.
Either at home, or in a restaurant, or at a christmas party.

Alone is a lousy way to spend christmas, imho.

I have never spent Christmas in Amsterdam but I do know that you should not count on a white Christmas in Holland. Amsterdam is pretty free, outgoing and tolerant and it should be fun spending Christmas there and chances are that shops and stores will be open on the second day of Christmas.

last year on the 26th i was in amsterdam. in the main street there were some tourist shops open, but not all shops . It normally is rainy and cold, it get's dark early, but amsterdam is beautifully lightened (not only in the red-light district!) it hardly ever snow's however. the temperature is between 0 and 5 degrees , at night maybe a bit less than zero.

Yes, there were pretty lights, and some places were open, but most closed. I visited my Dutch friends on Christmas Day and they had a nice afternoon dinner. I gave the children some gifts and they went to watch TV.
They were tired, so I went out and had fun.
