This car has been a pain In the butt for me, It Is a 1993 Lincoln Town Car Signature. It keeps putting really bad and has very little power to It and only gets up to about 30mph and If you try to press the gas pedal down It sounds like Its under water and makes crackling sounds and wont alcelerate. I replaced the battery,Altenator,Fuel filter and spark plugs the wires look almost new. Maybe the EGR Valve?

Any Idea what this could be without me taking It to a shop?
Any help would be great!
Thanks!

plugged catalytic converter-this will cause a restriction in the exhaust gases trying to exit the engine. If the converter is plugged up, the gases can't pass through it fast enough causing too much back pressure which causes the engine to run very poorly. lack of fuel pressure or volume- if the fuel pump is not providing enough fuel pressure or volume to feed the engine, again performance will suffer greatly. Mass air flow sensor- this senses how much air if being pulled into the engine. It uses this sensor to calculate how much fuel to add to the engine. If the maf is failing, it will not read the air coming into the engine properly and not add enough fuel to the engine. Throttle position sensor- this sensor tells the engine computer how much throttle the driver is giving the engine. If this sensor goes bad, you can press the gas pedal to the floor, but the engine still thinks the throttle is closed so it will not add fuel to the engine. there are so many things that could be going on with your car. the best way is to bite the bullet and just take it to a professional who is equipped to diagnos and repair cars. They'll be able to connect a scan tool to the computer to check for diagnostic codes and scan the engine data parameters that will tell them what portion of the engine is not operating properly. they will also have the right fuel pressure gauge and other diagnostic equipment needed to quickly and properly diagnos your car.

This sounds pretty serious I don't think your car has a bad EGR this can sometimes be the problem but the fact that you are flooring it only to get even worse behavior indicates on of many possible problems.

Check Timing, some V8's can run on very bad timing but without proper advance would behave a lot like this.

Valve Stems and Pushrods that are bent might be causing flooding, this usually happens when the car was revved too hard and the lifters bend the rod or the lifter breaks.

Detonation this would cause serious loss of power and has a great many causes including improper timing and excessive carbon deposits.

Check or replace those "new" looking plug wires. They can have gaps inside and look good on the outside. Today's engines with the high energy ignitions need the wires changed almost as often as the plugs. The crackling sound may be spark jumping across gaps in the wire or to ground through the insulation.

Remove air flow sensor, see the 2 small wires are clean. If OK then check catalytic converters.EGR problem should make the car run OK at high speed though.
