Because they only are thinking/care about themselves. They are ignorant and don't realize the serious implications and/or medical problems that it may bring upon their unborn child- especially the mothers who are young and not experienced with already having kids. I'm a smoker and I can honestly say that when I get pregnant I will NEVER smoke. My addiction isn't more important than my baby's health.

Well, it all comes down to will power. If you have never smoked, then you won't understand. Smoking is very addictive and habit forming, and you need the help and support of the people around you. It it not always as easy as, "this is not healthy for me and my baby", because it is very hard to quit. When someone tries to quit, sometimes it is easier and sometimes it is harder, depends on the person. Some people can just get up and quit.

Because, they are dumb, and they don't know that smoking is bad for the mom and baby. Maybe if they were a little bit more educated of the issue then they will get the Idea.

This is a great question.

I don't think anybody wants to harm their child. I believe, when you have an addiction, it's easy to say that the harm cigarettes have been proven to do to people in general is all just media hype and not real.

Or they are telling themselves that if they cut back they are doing their baby a favor. We need to keep educating the public!!!!

because quitting smoking cold turkey can cause stress on the mother and fetus. Slowing cutting down is better. I'm a non-smoker btw....

I cringe when I see that. Also when I see a pregnant woman drinking alcohol.

it's pretty sad, to be honest. my friends parents both used to smoke, but when her mom was having trouble, her dad did it too to help. now they've both quit.
